Thursday Morning Intercessory Prayer Service at 7.30am

This service is trialling an online arrangement using Zoom. Contact the office for invitation details.

This service arose from a time of crisis - Gulf War 1991 - when congregation members felt an urgent need to pray together for peace in the world. It has continued ever since, with a membership of about 20 persons, but with a focus on those in need because of illness or any other adversity in their life-walk.

The short service begins on Thursday mornings at 7:30am in the Vercoe Room at Wesley (TBC) with a period of 5 minutes silence or sometimes some music is played at this point. Then one of our members leads in a 10-minute devotion. This may be based on one of the lectionary readings for the week, or may be some current experience in the life of the person leading. It is a very personal sharing of insights. Often we are blessed with new insights into the words of scripture or the writing or experiences of other people. These are inspiring gems of the spiritual food that lift us into another realm of fellowship with the God.

Then we pray specifically first for those who have recently become ill or are severely ill, and who have agreed to be remembered in our prayer. Some of the persons are from our congregation, some are close or more remote family of our congregation member. Others are outside our immediate church family, such as neighbours or colleagues at work, or acquaintances in the wider world, and for whom we wish to pray, for one reason or another. We also pray for those who have been bereaved in the past year, and for members or friends who are travelling in Australia or abroad. All of us who attend have some particular persons on the list (or not on the list) for whom we are praying each week, and with whom we are constantly in touch. We also pray at times for particular critical situations within our country or in the wider world and we remember with joy the recovery of persons from illness, and the strength which people often tell us they received during their time of need and our prayers.

Occasionally we share a specific service of blessing and healing, using a form of service adapted from the Iona Community .

Newcomers to the service are always welcome. There is no obligation to lead a devotion but we are always enriched when new members do share in leading the meditation.

Over the years this service has been a sustaining and enriching experience for all of us - a high point of the week. Please check the Church Notices or with the Office for further information.
