WESLEY CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING

on 14 November 2024

Report to Congregation

Graeme Brown as a Lay Presider: Council endorsed with pleasure Graeme Brown’s application to the Canberra Region Presbytery that he be authorised to serve as a Lay Presider at sacraments conducted at Wesley. Graeme has completed a course and fulfilled other training requirements for that position. Once approved, a commissioning service at Wesley will be held.

Looking for Wesley’s Next Minister: Council reviewed a report prepared by John Sutton concerning the process of finding Wesley’s next Minister in Settlement – what has been accomplished (e.g., the recent election of congregational representatives to the Joint Nominating Committee), future steps, and how Council can help find suitable applicants for the position. John’s leadership of a small committee to jump start this process and his extensive work, assisted by others, in drafting a required profile of Wesley’s congregation and situation and what Wesley seeks in the next minister are greatly appreciated.

Wesley Tennis Club: The Tennis Club provided two detailed, well written submissions for Council consideration – one concerning a possible insurance claim for loss of income experienced by the club due to hailstorm damage at Wesley and resulting repair work and the other, a policy concerning dogs on church property. The viability of the first needs to be explored further. The second with a minor amendment was approved.

New Hot Water System in Foyer: As Property Committee Chair as well as Wesley’s Handyperson/Repairer/Property Manager Extraordinaire, Keith Hart regularly provides updates on property matters both small and large. Of interest to those who enjoy Sunday service morning tea, a new hot water system has been installed in the foyer kitchen.

A Service of Nine Lessons and Carols: Among the Advent services to come, Jade McFaul has organised a Nine Lessons and Carols service. That will be held on Saturday, 30 November, at 4pm in Wesley. Thank you Jade!

Congregational Life AGM 23 Feb 2025: It is anticipated that nominations for new Church Council members will be solicited in time for voting at the meeting. The meeting will also receive reports from the many Wesley groups. Please submit reports to the Wesley Office by 30 January 2025 to enable circulation prior to the meeting.

In attendance: Tarlie Alcock, Paul Chen, Sonia Di Mezza, Rev. Geoff Dornan, Keith Hart, Robert James, Jan Sismey (Chair), John Sutton.

Apologies: Susan Akhurst, Jenny Dean.
